The following steps will guide you through the process of using this tool effectively:

• Entering Age and Weight: Begin by selecting the age and weight of the child. Once you've done this, the tool will automatically calculate the minimum and maximum dosage based on the weight inputted.

• Dosage Display: The calculated dosages will be displayed to a maximum of 2 decimal places and will be rounded up or down to the nearest .0, .25, .5, or .75. Please note, this rounding does not apply to final dosages that are less than 1.

• Customizing Dosages: You have the option to adjust the maximum and minimum dosages for weight in accordance with your local protocol or guidelines. To do this, edit the dosage figures directly.

• Selecting Medications: You can select multiple medications as per your requirement. Each selected medication will be highlighted in blue.

• Deselecting Medications: To deselect a selected medication, simply click on the highlighted button again. If you want to deselect all the selected medications, use the "Clear" button.

• Understanding RR and HR: The tool provides respiratory rate (RR) and heart rate (HR) based on standard parameters for a healthy child who is awake and resting.

• Calculating Estimated Blood Volume: The tool uses the following criteria to calculate estimated blood volume:

  • Newborn: 90 ml/kg
  • 0 Months - 4 years: 80 ml/kg
  • 5 - 7 years: 75 ml/kg
  • 8 - 12 years: 70 ml/kg

• Tidal Volume (VT): The standard measure used for tidal volume is between 6 - 8 ml/kg.

• Calculating Maintenance Fluids: Maintenance fluids are calculated using a modified version of the Holliday-Segmar formula. Please note that the tool does not consider preoperative fasting or perioperative blood loss when determining the required amount of fluids.

  • 0 - 10 kg: 3 ml/kg/hr
  • 11 - 20 kg: 30 ml + 1 ml/kg/hr
  • Above 20 kg: 40 ml + 0.5 ml/kg/hr

• DC Cardioversion: The tool calculates DC cardioversion dosage by multiplying the child's weight (in kg) by 4.

• ETT and LMA Sizes: These are provided for uncuffed tubes. Please note, the suggested sizes may not be suitable for all patients.

• Print: If you wish to print, save as a PDF, or screenshot your calculations, click on the "Save as PDF" button. The tool will generate a printer-friendly page in a new window.
